Acid Burn

A permanent yellow or brown stain on photos and works-on-paper, caused by acids from wood pulps used in art and/or framing materials – leaching into the fiber of the artwork, causing the material to decompose and discolour. Acid Burn occurs when artwork is framed with paper materials that are not acid-free.

An example of acid burn resulting from acids leaching from an old mat board, onto and into the edges of the artwork.
